* Burial at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland Immediately following the visitation.

As yesterday's defenders of freedom, we want to welcome today's military service members into our ranks to become part of our elite group. Our common bond is the battlefield, whether it is service in the Persian Gulf, Korea, Kosovo, the War on Terrorism or peace-keeping expeditionary campaigns. Your courage and sacrifice have made a difference in preserving and defending world peace.

We kicked off the month of July by "MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT” while attending Honor Flight Maine’s welcome home at the Portland Jetport. While there I ran into Commander’s Special Project Chairman, Mark Reilly and many other VFW Members. I was so proud to see so many VFW covers in attendance. I was able to visit one of our Members at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. Past State Commander Bob Bernard was also there visiting a comrade. This is how we are "MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT " This month is extremely full of events. I plan on attending, in Boothbay Harbor, Boothbay V.E.T.S Annual BBQ.
  
Many of the Departments Leadership will be attending the National Convention in Columbus, OH. I always like attending these because this is where the Membership gets to vote on how our organization will move forward.
We have Maine Officer Leadership Development (MOLD) classes in Madison and Windham. Please attend one of these. There is a lot of valuable information put out in these classes. We will be "MAKING A POSITIVE IMPACT” this month by joining forces with my workplace, FedEx Express Portland, and collecting school supplies for the local children. This program will run until mid-August and then all collections will drop off at the Portland VFW who is also doing school supplies collections for distribution.
  
The Online Membership System (OMS) is up and running. We can see what we have in for Annual Members right now. The Life Members will drop in sometime in September. Please don’t wait till then to work on Membership. Contact your members and remind them why it is important to be a member of our great organization. I would really like to see all Posts conduct a Recruiting Event this year. Please make sure you submit it to our Membership Chairman Steven SanPedro so you can get credit for it.
Please keep doing all the great things you are doing for our Veterans, their Families and our Communities! I am very proud to serve with you as your Commander.

Phil enlisted in the Army in 1965 where you served for years in Vietnam.  He became a graphic designer and has worked for the state of Oregon for 26 years.  He retired in 2003 and started the Cartoon "In-Country".  The cartoons reflect his experiences during his tour of duty in South Vietnam.
